This is a general guide to housing as many people have gotten used to the new Safe rules that OSI introduced. T2A housing is not entirely safe, house looting can happen so make sure you understand how to keep your house and belongings secure.
Contents
House deeds
House deeds are newbie items and cannot be stolen or looted from your corpse, as long as they are placed in the top level of your backpack, and your character is not red.
Houses may be redeeded to be moved from the house sign menu. When you do this all the contents of the house will fall to the ground and be accessible to anyone. When you redeed a house the blessed deed goes directly to your backpack.
You may sell deeds back to the NPC for the full price paid.
House placement
House placement as viewed may not be entirely accurate when the client screen is not in the top left hand corner.
House Placement Rules
- All ground around the -outside- of the foundation must not have anything impassable (rocks, trees, etc).
- No impassable object or land may come in direct contact with any part of the house.
- Five tiles from the front and back of the house must be completely clear of all other houses.
- The foundation must rest flatly on a surface. Any bumps around the foundation are not allowed.
- The Foundation may not reside over terrain which is viewed as a road.
- Houses can only be placed in Britannia, not the T2A lost lands.
- There is an area of open grass around the Dungeon of Wrong which extends from the area near the passage to the valley where the dungeon is. This is not a coincidence, houses can not be placed here.
- Due to the high player base on the UO second age shard, there is practically no open land that is not already occupied by larger houses. Any place where there could be a larger house there already is. While you could buy a deed for these types of homes from a NPC vendor, it would be very hard to find land for. For this reason, players selling houses will also sell the land for an additional charge along with the deed, when selling a house.
Security
House keys
House keys are not blessed and thus may be stolen out of your pack or looted from your corpse if you die. A player with a key may enter your house if it is locked. If you lose a key, the house owner may use the house sign menu to re-key the house. You will get new keys to the house and the old keys including and copies made will no longer work on the front door. If your house in unlocked, anyone who is not banned may enter. The holder of a house key does not infer ownership of the house. The character who owns the house is displayed to friends of the house on the house sign.
How to lock your key ring to the front door: http://forums.uosecondage.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=26845 Using this method, there is no need to ever carry the key with you, and it can not be looted/stolen while it is locked down, unless the house collapses.
Secure containers
All houses are allowed at least one secure container. A secure container can hold a maximum of 125 items and 400 stones. Secures can only be accessed by friends of the house so things in this container are safe from being looted as long as your house friends don't turn on you. Secures can only be created and released by the owner of the house, not co-owners or friends. To secure a container in a house say "I wish to secure this". To unsecure the container say "I wish to unsecure this". Secures and their contents do not count against the maximum number of lockdowns a house has.
Locked down items
Some items, such as tables and chairs, will be destroyed if they are not locked down and a pet/mob runs into them.
Containers
Locked down containers are accessible to anyone who can get close enough to reach into them. Locked down containers can be locked with a key, but they will be pickable by anyone with sufficient skill. Locked down containers count as one lockdown against the maximum number of lockdowns a house is allowed, the contents of the container does not count towards that maximum. Locked down containers hold 125 items with unlimited weight. To lock down a container or any other object in the house say "i wish to lock this down". To release the object say "I wish to release this"
General House Security
After entering your own house, lock the door, close the door, and use the Detect Hidden skill. The Detect Hidden skill will never fail within a house of which you are at least a friend, and all hidden characters (except ghosts, see below) will be revealed. It is also wise to have a "wall" of lock downs preventing anyone from getting to your stash, should they happen to sneak in somehow. The hiding and detect hidden skills will always work in a house you own, which also means you can not raise these skills by using them in your house.
You may attack without penalty anyone inside your house who is not at least a friend, i.e. they will be grey to you.
If someone who is not a friend logs out inside your house, they will be ejected upon login, so there is no fear that someone can log off inside your house and log back in later when you are not there to protect it.
Ghosts can walk through closed house front doors and closed interior doors, but they can not interact with anything in the house, unless they can be resurrected there. They can not walk through furniture and some other objects, though. They can also be banned/ejected from the house, as can mobs and other players. However, they can not be detected/seen inside a house by the detect hidden skill, not even by house owner, house co-owner friend and/or someone with a GM detect hidden skill, unless they are in war mode.
Most houses larger than the small house have interior lockable doors.
As a courtesy, always close the door when leaving someone else's house.
House Safety
From outside the house, there only a few things, that can hurt your character. The Earthquake spell, since it is an area effect spell, it will distribute it's damage to anything living within 8 tiles of the character, in a house or not. If the house is a Keep or Castle there are places further inward where an earthquake cast outside an exterior wall will not reach a character. Otherwise, there doesn't appear to be any way to prevent this, and if characters are in the house mobs hanging around outside the wall are a tell tale sign there is someone home. An Earthquake can not kill a character directly, it halves the hitpoints of who it is used on. When at 1 hit point, it can do no more damage. Lastly, the Chain Lightning and Meteor Swarm spells can also hurt and kill you if are within 2 tiles of a wall of the house if a player targets a house.
Note: Due to a recently discovered (and ruled Era-Accurate) bug from the Era, it is now possible to attack anyone in a house with a stone foundation via the Chain Lightning and Meteor Swarm spells among other things. The range of 2 tiles is no longer in effect. You can attack them up to the range of the spell. Objects like Stone Ovens will block LOS if cleverly arranged.
You can not mark rune inside houses, so there is no fear that someone can recall or gate into your house, unless the rune is marked in the courtyard area of a Keep or Castle. However, anyone inside can gate OUT of the house, meaning someone could walk through the destination (gates are two-way portals) gate into your house, for this reason use extreme caution when gating out of your house. As a courtesy, never gate out of someone else's house without their permission. This is another method someone looking to loot a house may use, by sneaking inside, and gating out to let his friends in, so always use detect hidden when leaving or entering a house.
House commands
- I ban thee - Bans a targeted player and ejects him from the house, they can not re-enter, works even on mobs and player ghosts. There is a limit to the number of people/mobs you can have banned at a time.
- Remove thyself - ejects targeted player from the house, but they can re-enter
- I wish to lock this down - Lock down an item or container. A locked down container still has the 125 item limit, but can hold unlimited weight.
- I wish to release this - Release a locked down item or container.
- I wish to secure this - Secure a container, there is a weight limit to a container you can use this on
- I wish to unsecure this - Release a secured container
- I wish to place a trash barrel - Add a trash barrel. If you wish to place it again, you will need to destroy the current one by double clicking an axe and targeting it.
Decay
Houses must be refreshed within 14 days and they will decay (that is- collapse and disappear) if you fail to visit (you need only to open the door, which can be done from the inside even if the doors are locked) your house in this time. Some players like to wait at these houses labeled as IDOC (in danger of collapse) because when it falls, everything in the house will be freely lootable to all. In addition the house owner (not a house co-owner or friend) must refresh the house from time to or time, or else the message the house is condemned will be displayed and will decay and disappear if anyone but the house owner refreshes it.
There are a number of stages a house goes through before it decays, which can be viewed by clicking the house sign.
