A spellbook

A spellbook is an item required to cast spells. You may not cast a spell unless it is in your spellbook, unless you directly use a scroll. You may add spells to your spellbook by dragging a scroll on to it, as though it were a container.

Empty spellbooks can be bought from mages at mage shops. They may also be bought from players. Take special care when you buy one from a player. Some players will attempt to pass off empty spellbooks as full spellbooks, particularly on vendors. This is considered a legal scam. If you fall for it, you have no recourse. The Item ID skill will tell you whether or not a spellbook is full. It should be used on any spellbook you buy from an unknown or questionable source.

Spellbooks are blessed. In other words, they cannot be stolen and are not lost when you die (unless you place the spellbook within a container that is in your backpack).
